Abandoned Olympic Venues.
Olympic Village- Berlin, Summer Olympics 1936.
Let’s start with Berlin’s Olympic Village from the infamous 1936 Games.
Hitler wanted to use these games to showcase Germany’s prowess.
Today, it’s a ghost town.
The village once housed over 4,000 athletes but is now empty and overgrown with weeds.
The dining hall, gym, and practice facilities are all falling apart.
It’s eerie to think about the history these crumbling walls have witnessed.
Ski Jump Tower- Cortina D’Ampezzo, Winter Olympics 1956.
Next, we move to the stunning mountainside of Cortina D’Ampezzo, the host of the 1956 Winter Olympics.
This ski jump tower is where Switzerland’s Andreas Dascher introduced the “Dascher Technique.”
It stands tall among the beautiful pines, but up close, it’s clear this site has seen better days.
Ski Jump Tower- Grenoble, Winter Olympics 1968.
Grenoble’s ski jump from the 1968 Winter Games is in even worse shape.
The jump offers stunning views of the city, but the overgrown landing site and graffiti-covered support beams tell a sad story of neglect.
Olympic Stadium Train Stop- Munich, Summer Olympics 1972.
Munich hosted the Summer Games in 1972, but apparently, no one needs to visit the former Olympic Stadium anymore.
The train stop is overgrown with weeds, littered with trash, and covered in graffiti.
It’s hard to imagine it once buzzed with Olympic excitement.
Soviet Venue- Moscow, Summer Olympics 1980.
This Soviet structure in Tallinn, Estonia, hosted the regatta events during the 1980 Summer Olympics.

Unfortunately, the park is now an overgrown mess, a shadow of its former glory.
Mount Trebevic Bobsled Course- Sarajevo, Winter Olympics 1984.
Sarajevo’s 1984 Winter Olympics venues were devastated by the Bosnian War.

BMX bikers use it for stunts, giving it a new, albeit unofficial, life.
Ski Jump at Mount Igman- Sarajevo, Winter Olympics 1984.
The ski jump at Mount Igman shares a similar fate.
Unused and overgrown, its stadium-style seating looks ancient.
During the Siege of Sarajevo, the medal podium became a grim execution site.
Herndon Stadium- Atlanta, Summer Olympics 1996.
Herndon Stadium, used for field hockey in the 1996 Summer Olympics, saw some use as a filming location for the movie “We Are Marshall.”
Today, it’s another abandoned site, covered in graffiti.
Tennis Courts- Atlanta, Summer Olympics 1996.
Atlanta’s tennis courts in Stone Mountain were meant to anchor a new tennis center.
Sadly, financial troubles left them derelict, adding to the list of abandoned Olympic venues.
Olympic Aquatic Center- Athens, Summer Olympics 2004.
Greece spent nearly $17 billion on the 2004 Athens Olympics, but many venues, like the aquatic center, are now abandoned.
The once-spectacular pool where Michael Phelps won six gold medals is now filled with fetid water and trash.

The Beach Volleyball Center in Athens is another neglected site.
The sandy court and original seating are still there, but weeds have taken over the venue.

Today, it’s used as a refugee camp, highlighting the complex legacy of these venues.

Refugees began occupying it in 2013, but it remains semi-abandoned, another example of the complex fate of Olympic sites.
