Birmingham City FC has unveiled designs for “The Powerhouse,” a massive 62,000-seat new stadium set to become a beacon of the West Midlands.
Spearheaded by American billionaire Tom Wagner and Knighthead Capital, this project is more than just a football ground—it’s the heart of a 3$ billion Sports Quarter designed to transform East Birmingham.
This modern-day Colosseum will be one of England’s largest club stadiums, bigger than Anfield and the Emirates.
But its ambitious scale is matched by a spectacular design that pays tribute to the city’s industrial past.

Birmingham City’s New Stadium Iconic Design & Unrivalled Features
The new home for the Blues, designed by legendary Thomas Heatherwick (Heatherwick Studio) and MANICA Architecture, is anything but a generic ‘spaceship’ stadium.

- Twelve Massive Chimneys: Rising 120$ meters, these chimney-like towers are a structural, functional, and visual nod to Birmingham’s historic brickworks and industrial heritage. They will house lifts, staircases, ventilation systems, and structural support for the roof.
- Birmingham’s Highest Bar: One chimney will contain a lift to a hospitality space at the peak, offering panoramic city views.
- Retractable Roof and Moveable Pitch: A fully retractable roof can close in just 20 minutes. The pitch can slide out completely, allowing the venue to host major events, NFL games, rugby, and concerts year-round without damaging the turf.
- Engineered for Atmosphere: The seating bowl is designed with the steepest angle and stands pulled as close to the pitch as legally possible to create a “360-degree wall of fans” and amplify crowd noise.
The £3 Billion Sports Quarter Vision
The Powerhouse is the centerpiece of a 60-acre, £3 billion development that aims to create a 7-day-a-week destination in Bordesley Green.
- Comprehensive Sports Facilities:
- High-performance training grounds for men’s, women’s, and academy teams.
- A dedicated women’s team stadium.
- Community football pitches.
- Regeneration and Community: The wider plans include:
- A potential 15,000-20,000-seat indoor arena.
- Hotels, offices, restaurants, cafes, and food markets.
- Affordable housing and children’s play areas.
- Massive Economic Impact: The project is projected to create 8,400 jobs and contribute an estimated £370 million annually to the local economy, rising to £760 million by 2035.
- Government Backing: The UK government has committed £2.4 billion to extend the West Midlands Metro tram system directly to the Sports Quarter, highlighting its national significance.
Ambition, Bellingham, and the 62,000 Question

Club Chairman Tom Wagner, co-founder of Knighthead Capital, has demonstrated staggering ambition, targeting completion by the 2030/31 season.
- The Jude Bellingham Factor: At the unveiling, a promotional video featured former academy star and current world-class player, Jude Bellingham. Wagner openly expressed his dream of providing a platform for Bellingham’s “great coming home story.”
- The Capacity Challenge: While current attendance is around 25,000, filling 62,000 seats—a size greater than Premier League giants—requires the Championship club to secure and maintain a genuine top-flight presence. Wagner, however, is building for the future, not the past.
The project is backed by Tom Wagner’s considerable financial commitment and world-class design and architecture teams.
While the challenges are immense, the vision—which even involves Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight—is arguably the most ambitious undertaking in modern English football.
It will either be a spectacular success story of vision and regeneration, or a monumental overreach.
What are your thoughts on “The Powerhouse” and the £3 billion Sports Quarter? Can Birmingham City fill 62,000 seats?
